Trick Mobile Set Up!

I decided I didn’t want to put an under dash/seat radio or drill holes in my car. I decided to use a cheap handheld radio with ear piece and lapel mic, coupled to a mag mount whip antenna with the coax cable fed through the door frame gasket. It worked great, but I had to lay the antenna down every time I parked in the garage.

Next, I went to my junk antenna collection and rigged a lot of parts together till I ran across one with a SO-239 base mag mount. A simple adapter of a PL-259 to SMA connector coupled the shorty antenna to the mag mount. The end result was an inexpensive mobile radio that is easily disconnected for use as a handheld. It’s great value for a budget minded ham.
